For parents

A new way for your child
to feel capable in math.

Your child doesn’t have to feel confident in math to get started. At Math Cases, students build, investigate, and make decisions about real-world questions—from designing a better snack box to figuring out why concert tickets cost so much. With hands-on materials and guided discussion, they practice grade-level math, explain their thinking, and try new approaches. The goal is deeper understanding and growing confidence in what they can do.

Math Cases welcomes every learner, with particular care for students who don’t yet see themselves as “math people.”

Primarily grades 5–8, with selected high school cases.

What your child can expect

An idea is a place to begin.

HANDS-ON EXPLORATION

Something they
can figure out.

Students build, sort, measure, and compare. A physical model or familiar situation gives them an entry point into the math.

MATH WITH A PURPOSE

A reason to
keep thinking.

Each case asks students to make a decision. Grade-level concepts become tools for answering a question they have a reason to care about.

SUPPORT AND STUDENT VOICE

Room to try.
Room to explain.

Guidance arrives as students need it. They can ask questions, hear another approach, and build a mathematical argument of their own.

A glimpse inside

Real questions.
Plenty to get curious about.

Before getting started

A few questions
from families.

Is this a fit if my child feels anxious about math?

Math Cases is designed with math-hesitant students in mind. Students can begin with a prediction, a physical model, or an observation, then build their understanding with guidance. Share what helps your child feel comfortable when you inquire.

How do I find a workshop for my child?

Share your interest with your child’s grade and a case they might enjoy. Melissa can discuss available options and which experience could be a good fit.

Which ages and grades do you serve?

Most cases are designed for grades 5–8, with selected high school cases. The case library lists the intended grade band and mathematical focus for each experience.

What math will my child practice?

Each case page lists its mathematical focus and what students do. Explore the library to find topics such as volume and surface area, statistics, percentages, and scale.
